DOUG WICKEN, bassist:

Doug Wicken was born in Hamilton, Ontario, where he began playing the saxophone while at Hill Park Secondary School. It was there, at the age of 15, he was first exposed to jazz.

At the age of 21, Doug switched to playing the double bass, studying with Dave Drew and Jack Lander, and attending jazz workshops with master bassist Ron Carter. For many years he served as the bassist with The Barry Wills Trio in Kitchener-Waterloo, and has performed on numerous occasions with the John Tank Quartet and The Bernie Carroll Project, as well as leading groups of various sizes under his own name. He currently lives in Kitchener, performing with his own duos and trios, and freelancing with other groups in the area.

In addition to his performances as a double-bassist, Doug also contributes original jazz compositions, and occasionally doubles as a flutist, an instrument he adopted in 2004.

JOSH SMILEY, pianist:

Originally from Hamilton, Ontario, Josh completed his studies at Mohawk College, studying with Adrean Farrugia. Graduating from Mohawk with Honours, he received numerous scholarships, including the Richard Newall Memorial Scholarship and the Antony Roberts Music Excellence Award.

After Mohawk College he continued his studies, earning a Bachelor’s Degree from the University of Toronto, and receiving the Jean A. Chalmers Award. There he learned from Canadian jazz greats Dave Young, David Restivo, Mike Murley, Chase Sanborn, and Gordon Foote.

Still living in Toronto, Josh is a busy performer, playing in many large and small ensembles, with some of the top musicians in the city, including groups such as John Macleod’s Rex Hotel Orchestra, Marie Goudy 12tet, and the Sonuskapos Jazz Orchestra. He also performs occasionally with the TMJ Trio and the Doug Wicken Duo.
