Doug Wicken was born in Hamilton, Ontario, where he began playing the saxophone while at Hill Park Secondary School. It was there, at the age of 15, he was first exposed to jazz.
At the age of 21, Doug switched to playing the double bass, studying with Dave Drew and Jack Lander, and attending jazz workshops with master bassist Ron Carter. For many years he served as the bassist with The Barry Wills Trio in Kitchener-Waterloo, and has performed on numerous occasions with the John Tank Quartet and The Bernie Carroll Project, as well as leading groups of various sizes under his own name. He currently lives in Kitchener, performing with his own duos and trios, and freelancing with other groups in the area.
In addition to his performances as a double-bassist, Doug also contributes original jazz compositions, and occasionally doubles as a flutist, an instrument he adopted in 2004.
