Doug Wicken began playing the double bass at the age of 21, studying with Dave Drew, Jack Lander and Ron Carter.
For 22 years he served as the bassist with The Barry Wills Trio in Kitchener-Waterloo, and often performed with the John Tank Quartet, as well as leading groups under his own name. He created JAZZART in the mid-1970s as an all-encompassing title for multiple jazz projects.
After a lengthy absence from K-W, he returned in 2015 and has performed at The Jazz Room, The Registry Theatre and The Waterloo Uptown Jazz Festival with The Bernie Carroll Project.
JAZZART has recently been resurrected as an outlet for duo, trio and quartet performances. Pianist Ralph Hetke, one of its original members, joins Doug in the new venture.
Ralph is also a member of The Bernie Carroll Project and has performed with The Peter Noone Show, Major Hooples Boarding House and Gravity, among many other bands.
