    The open mic is open to all sorts of artist and a good place to get your sea legs if you’ve never performed.

    About the feature:
    Since first emerging onto the Vancouver Poetry Slam stage, MacRae has carved out a reputation as an innovative writer and performer, a passionate arts educator, and a dedicated community organizer. He’s been a regional and national level slam champion, in addition to which he was the 2013 Victoria Spoken Word Festival Poet of Honour.
    In the slam community, MacRae has been a three-time regional champion (2010, Vancouver team champion; 2013/2016 Vancouver individual champion), as well as having won the inaugural Canadian Festival of Spoken Word underground indies title in 2011. All told, he has represented Vancouver at national poetry slam tournaments four times, and Victoria once.
    Whether performing, teaching, or organizing, MacRae continues to prove that he is one of the most versatile, innovative, and dedicated spoken word artists in the country.

    Slam rules etc
    • Each poet must slam 3 times during the entire season to qualify for a chance to compete for the 2017 slam team.
    • Each poet must perform original work for which they are the primary author.
    • No props. (Referencing or using any THING that is not available to all poets.)
    • People are not props, group poems are allowed in all competitions except during finals and special head to head slams.
    • No costumes. (Wearing clothing or accessories that are obviously meant to accentuate a poem and that is worn to enhance a specific performance.
    • No nudity.
    • No musical accompaniment or musical instruments.
    • Poets who use props, costumes or musical accompaniment will be deducted 2 points per infraction.
    • Poets have 3 minutes and a grace period of 10 seconds to perform their poem, after which time 0.5 points will be deducted for every 10 seconds or part thereof that they go over.
    • A poet’s time starts as soon as they engage the audience. This includes any verbal or physical introduction.
    • Of the scores the poet receives from the five randomly selected judges, the high and low scores are dropped and the middle three are added together, giving the poet a total score of 30.
    • There will be up to two sacrificial poet to calibrate the judges for the 1st round.
    • The order that the poets will compete in each round will be drawn randomly.
    • The slam will be two rounds
    • 10 poets in the 1st Round
    • Four poets in the 2nd Round

    All Guelph Spoken Word events are promoted as consent positive spaces; we ask that all persons receive explicit consent before physically engaging another. Same goes for deep conversations and advice/feedback.
    Language and content of GSW events can sometimes be intense and triggering, while GPS is an all ages event and we do most often have an active listener on hand, attendees discretion is advised.
    **Unfortunately our venue for GPS is not wheelchair accesible.**
