Sound of the Mountain with Ben Grossman
SOTM are touring Canada to release their first studio recording, Amplified Clarinet and Trumpet.
A duo featuring the hollowed-out sounds of Elizabeth Millar and Craig Pedersen playing amplified trumpet and clarinet, Sound of the Mountain comes from a strong history of improvisation and extended performance techniques, offering their audience long-form deep listening experiences through the sculpting of vitalized breath. They play improvised music and composed material in the form of graphic scores created by the artists. Highlights of their work include concerts across Ontario, Quebec, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, British Columbia, Singapore, Australia & Malaysia, including 2016 editions of Halifax’s Obey Convention and Pop Montreal, and a week long residency at Concordia University’s Matralab with the electro-acoustic duo Instant Places. In August SOTM head to Japan for a three-month residency before returning to Southeast Asia and Australia to tour.
Ben Grossman — Guelph
Ben Grossman is a busy musician: improviser, studio musician, composer, noisemaker and audio artist. He works in many fields, having played on over 100 CDs, soundtracks for film and television, sound design for theatre, installations, work designed for radio transmission, and live performances spanning early medieval music to experimental electronica. Ben’s tools of choice are electronics, percussion, and, especially, the hurdy gurdy (vielle à roue), a contemporary electro-acoustic string instrument with roots in the European middle ages. He studied the instrument in Europe (with Valentin Clastrier, Matthias Loibner and Maxou Heintzen) and has also studied Turkish music in Istanbul. With an abiding interest in pushing the limits of his instruments and pushing the boundaries of whatever venue or medium in which he works, Ben’s solo CD, Macrophone was released in 2007 and features a unique two disc form for simultaneous, aleatoric playback. Ben was also the founder, artistic and administrative director (2012-2015) of Silence, an internationally respected venue and concert series for new and experimental music and sound art.
