    CHRISTIAN ANTONACCI TRIO – “the hottest jazz 20-somethings in Toronto”
    There’s an almost underground scene in Toronto’s jazz community where the 20-somethings, often recent graduates from the city’s jazz programs, congregate. Toronto’s Jazz Bistro and the Rex often books the best of these youngsters, giving them an opportunity to showcase their ever-evolving skills before an audience. For those that follow this scene, there are 3 names you often see in constant circulation among the top-shelf of the 20-somethings — Christian Antonacci on trumpet, Jack Johnston on bass & Mateo Mancuso. This trio of players show up in a myriad of exploratory groups — and are a trio that Brownman Ali of BROWNTASAURAS RECORDS has been keeping a keen eye on of late. When asked to assemble various acts for the Guelph Jazz Fest’s series at Royal City Music — Brown was quick to call all 3 of them, who were all available and excited to put together a trio, under Christian’s leadership, to explore a night of standards and originals. Don’t miss this chance to see this new generation of Canada’s most dynamic jazz youth on stage together exploring the depths of the modern jazz artform.

    A message from Jim Duffield, owner of Royal City Studios
    ===========
    A month ago the fate of Royal City Studios was unknown. We were on the brink of closure after a long struggle to stay open during the pandemic, but thanks to THIS front page story in the Guelph Mercury, our plight as a dying service built to serve this region’s musical community was made public and — thankfully — a few gracious investors came out of the woodwork. The result was an influx of life saving funds, a restructuring, and — most importantly — we’re still here, as a recording studio, rehearsal space and concert venue! So when the Guelph Jazz Festival approached me to ask if our freshly reborn venue would be interested in being one of the destinations in their “About Town” Club Series (Sept 15-18), I of course immediately wanted that opportunity. BUT, it was already late in the game and this wasn’t something I could think about earlier, when my space’s survival was hanging in the balance. But now that we were through that gauntlet (for now anyway), where was I going to find 4 fantastic top-shelf groups on such short notice to create 4 nights of awesome shows? Well — in high school, a million years ago, I played tenor saxophone and was grateful to have, back then, been among those playing in all of the ensembles and (gratefully) winning awards. And at my side there was ALWAYS a Trinidadian born trumpet player, who was one of my closest friends. We played in everything together, from concert band, to the big band, to jazz ensembles, to even a small combo that he ran. He would move to New York City and today, a million years later, he’s now called “Canada’s pre-eminent jazz trumpet player” by the New York Village Voice, after training in NYC with the legendary Randy Brecker. He has gone on to play with the likes of Jay-z, Guru, Mos Def, Missy Elliot, Paul Simon & Quincy Jones and has won more awards than I can name including being a 2x National Jazz Award winning, a 6x Global Music Award winner, and appeared on the cover of NOW magazine after being called “Toronto’s top jazz musician”…. all this when he’s not running his own jazz record label in Brooklyn, New York: BROWNTASAURAS RECORDS. Yes, my old highschool friend is indeed the multi-award-winning jazz iconoclast: BROWNMAN ALI. So I reached out to him and asked if he could perhaps help programme these nights so we could present a full schedule — and he not only immediately agreed to help, but also suggested we try staffing the nights with Artists affiliated with his label, since they’d be the most likely to be willing to haul themselves out here to Guelph to be part of these nights. And that’s how we ended up with such top-tier programming from Sept 15 to 18. JAY YOO (Thr-Sep-15) is the guitarist from the label’s electric-jazz group SNAAGLE; BROWNMAN ELECTRYC TRIO (Fri-Sep-16) is the multi-award winning flagship group on the label (often touring the globe); CHRISTIAN ANTONACCI (Sat-Sep-17) is a 23 year old rising trumpet star Brown’s been keeping his eyes on and Christian’s backing musicians (Jack and Mateo) also play in the label’s BROWNMAN AKOUSTIC TRIO; and lastly NICK MACLEAN QUARTET (Sun-Sep-18) is one of the label’s busiest modern jazz group’s, fronted by 6x Global Music Award winning Nick Maclean, who has been a protege of Brown’s since he was 22, and who is about to release his 4th recording on Browntasauras Records. We are unimaginably grateful to all these musicians, and Brown himself, for coming to Guelph to play my venue and make us be part of the Guelph Jazz Festival. I would personally like to invite you to join us here at Royal City Studios on any (or all!) of these nights to bear witness to what some of the country’s best in jazz sound like. It’s a rare chance to see them in Guelph, so don’t miss it! See you here!

    P.S. — BRAVO! did a documentary on Brown back in 2007 and I was honored to have been interviewed as part of it! It’s now on Vimeo, and it pre-dates rise rise to now being in the jazz & hip-hop history books, but is an excellent look at his early career and history (and includes some shots of both the jazz camp and the high school we both attended!).
