Legendary Canadian instrumental rock outfit Shadowy Men on a Shadowy Planet were early pioneers of the Canadian indie music scene, and they proved they still knew how to rock nearly 30 years after their inception. Despite the band rejecting the label of surf rock, the tunes are undeniably evocative of the genre.

Psychedelic alt-country band The Sadies formed in 1994 and first played in Guelph in 1996 opening for Jale (Sub Pop). Over the years they have returned to Guelph numerous times and headlined Dog Day Afternoon 1999-2008. Consisting of brothers Dallas and Travis Good, drummer Mike Belitsky and upright bassist Sean Dean, The Sadies’ inspired culmination of psychedelia, country and western and instrumental rock has made them the preeminent torchbearers of cosmic Canadiana music.

You may have seen the two bands at Hillside a couple of years ago performing all of Alice Cooper’s 1971 LP, Love It to Death. They share a kinship and, notably, a member: Sadies’ Dallas Good plays bass in Shadowy Men, filling in for the dearly departed Reid Diamond. Good was in a band with Shadowy Men’s Don Pyle and Diamond called Phono-Comb, so their history is rich and deep.
