The Brick Quartet will be joined by the inimitable Ben Grossman!
—Brick Quartet—
Jeff Henderson: Sax and Clarinet
Vicky Mettler: Guitar
Raphaël Foisy : Bass
Jacob Desjardins: Drums
The Brick Quartet consists of three musicians from Montreal, Canada—Vicky Mettler on guitar, Raphaël Foisy-Couture on bass and Jacob Desjardins on drums joined on tour this fall by New Zealand saxophonist Jeff Henderson. The group stems from an impromptu recording session in September 2013, which was later released as an album titled ‘Built like a Brick Shithouse’. The music brings together sounds from jazz, European free improve, blues and western folk music with dismantled rock rhythms and jagged noise.
Jeff Henderson is a prolific improviser who has performed internationally with artists such as Evan Parker, Steve Lacy, Peter Brotzmann, Han Bennink, Paal Nilssen-Love, and William Parker, among others. Intense and uncompromising,
his performances have been described as ‘shock-and-awe projections of force into hostile territory’.
Vicky Mettler, Raphael Foisy-Couture and Jacob Desjardins are highly active on the experimental music scene of Montreal, regularly performing with local improvisers as well as composing for their group and solo projects. In the past year, they have participated, in different configurations, in the Suoni Per Il Popolo Festival (Mtl), the Jewish General Hospital Jazz Festival (Mtl), the Font Music Festival (Mtl), Rencontres de musiques spontanées (Rimouski), Audiopollination (Toronto) and Zula presents (Hamilton).
“Their works are worthwhile examples of free improvised statements…In most improvisations they work towards moments of enormous intensity…Fine interplay, great playing by Henderson and absolutely a captivating journey.”
