The Colin Fisher/Mike Gennaro Duo is one of the most exciting improvisational jazz groups in Canada today. Drawing inspiration from all forms of jazz, rock and world music, this duo’s intensely passionate sound is so robust and energetic that you might mistake them for a much larger group. In the short time since their formation in March of 2014, the duo has already managed to release a fiery collection of live performances entitled “Sine Que Non” on Arachnadiscs Records. In support of the release, they ventured out on a short fall U.S. tour, which saw them sharing the stage with legendary New York avant-psych band Oneida and Skyler Skjelset of Fleet Foxes among others. They have also performed at Hamilton’s Steel City Jazz Festival, Toronto’s 416 Creative Improvisers Festival as well as several other venues in Ontario including Silence in Guelph, HAVN in Hamilton and Musideum, The Tranzac and Ratio in Toronto.
Multi-instrumentalist and composer Colin Fisher has been a ubiquitous voice in North America’s creative music community since the late 90’s. He has been most active with the duo project Not The Wind, Not The Flag with percussionist Brandon Valdivia. They have done several North American tours and have a substantial recorded output that includes releases on Healing Power, Medusa, Inyrdisc, and Barnyard Records, as well as a forthcoming vinyl release with the legendary bassist William Parker on New Atlantis records.
In 2014 Colin collaborated with the Philadelphia noise rock band Many Arms and recorded “Suspended Definition” for John Zorn’s Tzadik label. Rave reviews and an extensive North American tour followed in the wake of this celebrated release. As a member of the AIMToronto Orchestra, Fisher performed at the Guelph Jazz Festival in 2010. This performance featured the music of Anthony Braxton, with Mr. Braxton himself conducting and playing with the orchestra.
Colin has also collaborated with Deily Mori Tounkara, Jah Youssouf, Rhys Chattam, Dominic Duval, Sabir Mateen, Joe McPhee, Paul Hession, The Constantines and Caribou.
Drummer Mike Gennaro has been an active part of Toronto’s improvised music community since the mid 90’s. He has collaborated with Juini Booth (Sun Ra, McCoy Tyner), John Butcher, Kevin Drumm, Eugene Chadbourne, Veryan Weston and Wilbert deJoode among others. A trio record with Swedish saxophonist Mats Gustafsson and guitarist Kurt Newman was released on Spool Records in 2000. Since then, he has mainly focused on performing but released “Meditations On First”, a duo record with pianist Simeon Abbott in 2013 and “Sine Qua Non” with saxophonist Colin Fisher in October of 2014.
Mike has performed throughout Europe and North America, and has made appearances at the Toronto International Jazz Festival, VICTO-TO Festival, Something Else! Creative Music Festival and Steel City Jazz Festival. http://www.mikegennaromusic.com/improvisation
