The Karpinka Brothers at the Cornerstone with Wooden Bridge

    The Karpinka Brothers
The Karpinka Brothers may very well be the truest and purest artists to ever come out of Saskatchewan. Their sound bridges a curious gap between Van Morrison, Joel Plaskett, and outsider artists like Daniel Johnston. You Can Count On Me, the band’s third album since 2008, is weighted with songs of forgiveness, acceptance, and understanding, which shouldn’t come as any surprise given that the brothers volunteer regularly to perform at a local longterm care home. Their songwriting and delivery is honest, blunt, and heartwarming – descriptors that can easily be misread as trivial, but they ring so true in the context of this album. They capture a magic that just can’t be faked.

    “…SOME OF SASKATOON’S FINEST.”—CBC

“CALLS TO MIND SOME OF THE LAST CENTURY’S MOST FAMOUS BROTHER BANDS.”—EXCLAIM!

“…INSTANTLY ENGAGING…THE CLASSIC POP OF BUDDY HOLLY WITH MORE THAN A HINT OF THE EVERLY BROTHERS BESIDES.”—NO DEPRESSION

    “…CONSISTENTLY IRRESISTIBLY CHARMING…”—COUNTRY STANDARD TIME

    Wooden Bridge
Wooden bridge is Andrew Hagen and DJ Thomson.

Andrew has always been moved by music. In high school and university he was a drummer for a few bands covering music by REM, Pearl Jam, Dave Mathews Band and more. After his first year of university, however, music was put on hold for well over a decade.

The sudden death of his brother in 2013 sent him whirling, needing a place to deal with his emotions and providing a fresh perspective on life and dreams. Add to that his mother’s sudden death in 2014, a trip to Texas with a visit to a prison and you get a large outpouring of songs about life, loss, children and more.

Over the last two years Andrew has re-entered the realm of live performance and has taken his emotionally driven acoustic based songs to open stages in the Guelph and surrounding areas where he met D.J Thomson who would join in on his fiddle.

The first thing that you will know about D.J. is that he has a beard, a giant, fluffy, wild beard. D.J. has been teaching violin in music schools for 8 years and is a huge fan of everything involved with music. However, he started playing violin long before he had the beard and knows a thing or two about many musical styles, including classical, jazz, swing, pop, rock, celtic, bluegrass, ABBA (yes ABBA was their own style), or ugly yet fun sound effects. This made it easy for DJ to join in on any song at any time capturing the mood and adding to the depth of the songs.
