DESCRIPTION:GREAT LAKE SWIMMERS WITH SPECIAL GUEST NICK ZUBECK \nFeaturing a blend of acoustic instruments\, rural soundscapes\, and wistful vocals\, Great Lake Swimmers are a critically acclaimed indie-folk group led by songwriter/vocalist Tony Dekker. Based in Toronto\, Ontario\, the group emerged in the early 2000s with a succession of heavily atmospheric albums recorded in old silos and rural country churches. The music developed in that pastoral warmth\, performed and recorded in acoustically unique and historical locales with a revolving cast of personnel. They are renowned for their homespun folk and lush\, intimate Americana in their live set. Great Lake Swimmers celebrated their 20th anniversary in 2023 with Uncertain Country\, an album where doubts are followed by discovery\, demos end up as finished tracks\, and themes of new beginnings\, rear-view reflections\, and ruminations on the fluidity of time form the basis of the eleven new songs. It follows a prolonged period of collective anxiety. Recorded in different locales—and with a variety of musicians—a theme of questioning runs throughout. Even before the world turned upside down\, Dekker felt mired in uncertainty: from the climate crisis to the ever-changing political landscape. The “uncertain country” chosen as the album’s theme is not a specific place. Rather\, it’s a territory we\, as humans\, inhabit in the 21st century — a world that\, more often than not\, is confusing\, unfamiliar and unsettling. “Moonlight\, Stay Above” epitomizes what Great Lake Swimmers represents. A 10-voice strong women’s choir (Niagara’s Minuscule) lifts the lonely-sounding and wistful song up. As with that addition\, the band on each album is fluid and always evolving. Great Lake Swimmers were shortlisted for the prestigious Polaris Music Prize and nominated twice for Canada’s JUNO Awards\, with the CBC calling them “a national treasure.” \n“Dekker’s preoccupation with the Canadian state of mind flourishes in his lyrics. SUMMARY:Tia Brazda
DESCRIPTION:One of Canada’s most recognizable voices in jazz\, Tia Brazda’s jazz-pop gems and retro style have established her as a unique presence on the jazz scene\, both at home and abroad. Not only a singer\, but a songwriter as well\, Brazda has performed at the Montreux Jazz Festival\, main stage at the Festival International de Jazz de Montreal\, as well as toured many times across North America and Europe\, from intimate supper clubs to large outdoor festivals. Her music has been described as a “hip pastiche” and a “walking catalogue of 20th century jazz styles”. Her first single “Cabin Fever” broke through in 2012 and she followed that up with the 2015 full-length Bandshell\, named as one of the best of the decade in the Italian press and one of the best of the year by Jazz FM 91 in Toronto. Her 2018 release ‘Daydream’ saw her exploring new grooves such as bossa nova\, soul and tango. Her new album WHEN I GET LOW out May 27th\, finds her delving into the past\, interpreting well-known classics from the Great American Songbook and making them her own. \nStu Harrison \nStu Harrison attended the University of Toronto’s Jazz Performance program\, graduating with Honours in 2003. It was then that he also started Stu Harrison Music\, a commercial and wedding music company that worked extensively throughout Ontario\, supplying music to a wide variety of high-profile clientele. During the same period\, he was also Music Director and Composer for Garden Brothers Circus\, performing more than 1000 shows to well over 2 million people. In 2006 he joined Merriam Music\, the largest private music school in Canada as well as its highest volume piano dealer\, and took on a variety of roles\, including teaching\, retailing\, curriculum development\, marketing\, and eventually to the executive level where he serves as head of Sales\, Marketing\, and Strategic Development. In October 2016\, Stu released his debut album “Volume 1” (One Nightstand Records)\, to critical acclaim\, featuring Canadian legends Terry Clarke\, and Neil Swainson. Stu continues to perform\, accompany\, MD\, and arrange regularly throughout Canada.
